7 Steps to Self-Publish a Kindle Book Successfully
Step 01: Define Target Audience
Without a target audience, an eBook is useless. You need to have a targeted market in order to increase subscribers, traffic and build a trustworthy relationship. Before you start thinking about penning down your content on a blank page, stop and ask yourself who are you writing to and what is it that you can offer to them.
Step 02: Write
Once you know who you are writing to, the next step is to write. Come up with a table of content and think in terms of 3 drafts – the sketch draft, the review draft, the editorial draft. Each draft may in fact have multiple versions and iterations but this three step approach will help you to get your work finished without endlessly stalling.
Step 03: Format Your Content
Next is to format your content according to Kindle pubilshing guidelines. The best is to do this using Microsoft Word or Pages for Mac. Make use of page breaks and do not use headers, footers or any sexy fonts because it will not translate on Kindle. Bold/Italic/Underline formatting are encouraged and .JPG images are allowed.
Step 04: Upload and Publish
By this step, you are ready to upload and publish you book! To do this, register for an Amazon account and head to the KDP section. Register your information and click on “Bookshelf and then ”Add New Title”. Fill out the form and follow the rest of the uploading steps. Within 24-48 hours, Amazon will email you when the book is ready and published.
Step 05: Promote
Once your book is listed on Amazon, you need to get some reviews. Reviews are important because they’re your “social proof” that will legitimize your work to new readers. Before the book’s release, send it to friends, family and followers of yours who would be willing to leave a review. Once your book is live, remind your early readers about it.
Step 06: Spread the Word
Congratulations! At this stage you are ready to tell the world about your book. A book launch should create buzz to help spread the event. Send an email to your list of friends/family/subscribers and annouce the release of your book. Offer an incentive for those who buy the book. Utilize social media, word of mouth, online forums, book directories.
Step 07: Reap the Snowball Effect
As your book begins to sell, it will create a snowball effect as books can spread pretty fast when everything is digital. The days of waiting years to be picked and pubilshed are over. Now you can do it on your own. If you ever wanted to get a message in front of a lot of people, there’s never been a better time to do so.
